Thoth: the great teacher of antiquity

Thoth: the great master of antiquity.

According to some written materials, Thoth was one of the leading teachers of antiquity.

He was the god of wisdom and invented all words.

According to legend, there were three Thoth-Hermes.

The first of them was an Atlantean and, according to some sources, he wrote for the first time the phrases: “as above, so below” and “as within, so without”.

There are discrepancies as to whether the first to use the famous phrases was the Atlantean Thoth or whether Hermes himself did it.

Although most opinions lean towards the first option, as Thoth wrote numerous books.

These comparisons refer to the universe and the world, as well as to the laws that govern the lives of human beings and that come from a principle or axiom called Correspondence.

Trismegistus means three times great and was the title that the Greeks gave to Thoth when they baptized him as Hermes: messenger and communications god, whom the Romans later called Mercury.

This distinction of Tris-megistus corresponds to the fact that there were three Thoth-Hermes.

  • The former was king and priest in Atlantis, but when this continent collapsed he emigrated to Egypt and there he wrote 42 books in which he bequeathed all his knowledge.

Before Hermes, who was a prophet, appeared, the Atlantean priest attained immortality, becoming an Egyptian deity, and this is his second personification.

Then came Trismegistus, who is the avatar of Thoth, who is said to have lived 300 years and developed alchemy, astrology, medicine and also geometry because he was the teacher of Pythagoras.

His philosophy is called Hermeticism , and because it was addressed only to a group capable of understanding his teachings, the occult and inaccessible took the name of Hermetic.

The Emerald Tablet

The Emerald Tablet is Hermes Trismegistus’ best-known book, where he reveals everything concerning alchemical transmutations, as well as expounding their principles or axioms.

Some of the phrases of Hermes Trismegistus contained in this text were used so much that they even became slogans.

  • Such is the case of “as above, so below” and “as within, so without.”

It is said that The Emerald Tablet was translated by Isaac Newton, who apart from being one of the most brilliant scientists in history, was an alchemist.

Even, according to one rumor, he went crazy as a result of the mercury.

The Kybalion

The peak book on Hermes Trismegistus corresponds to the twentieth century and was entitled Kybalion.

Kybalion translates as guide. This book on the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus was published in 1908 and it is a mystery who wrote it, since its authors sign as Three Initiates.

Although research was carried out, they were never able to detect the origin of the work, which had a great influence on Western thought in the twentieth century and still has it since it is a source of inspiration for coaching.

It is above all a reflection on the universe, based on seven axioms as initially written by Thoth.

The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of understanding” is one of Kybalion’s famous phrases, which illustrates the central message of the Three Initiates, which means that only those with some training can access knowledge.

The second principle, called Correspondence, is the best known of all because it contains the well-remembered paraphrases: as above, so below, as within, so without.

In this text the seven Hermetic Principles are discussed. The book is composed of fifteen parts and dedicates one of them to each postulate between chapters VII and XIII.

Below we list and describe each of the seven axioms that summarize the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus, among which his well-known phrase stands out: “as above, so below“.

Mentalism

This is the first Hermetic axiom and it speaks of the universe being a mental creation of the WHOLE. We are a kind of atom of that limitless brain, which works according to certain universal laws. In this great infinite spirit everything is interconnected, which explains why paranormal phenomena happen.

Correspondence

Each being is a microcosm, within a macrocosm in which there are infinite planes that human intelligence cannot reach.

However, through the principle of correspondence it is possible to understand them, because as above so below, and vice versa. Likewise, “as inside, so outside“.

Although the concept of what is above and below is quite clear, it is worth noting that the word above speaks of the macrocosm and the word below of the microcosm.

On the other hand, just as this phrase refers to the universe, the second: “as inside, so outside”, means that according to what we have inside: this is how we will perceive the world, because it is our own reflection.

Vibration

Everything is in permanent motion and different frequencies of vibration are produced. There are spirits that move at a higher speed, which are on the highest scales of the universe, and others with very weak energy that are located on the lower scales.

Polarity

Every element has its opposite, and this phenomenon is what gives rise to motion. The opposite poles are the way in which the same thing manifests itself and do not represent different aspects, but part of the same expressed in different degrees.

Rhythm

The rhythm is observed through a chain of permanent advances and setbacks. Just as the tide rises and then falls, every existence has its flats. This principle is evident in the course of history, both in personal life and in nations.

Cause and effect

This is a very important law of Hermes. It talks about nothing happening by chance and that everything is the consequence of previous acts or events. Life unfolds according to a set of consequences and what is called luck is the product of previous causes that have gone unnoticed.

Gender

In everything the principle of gender is present, which refers to the essence of the feminine or masculine being, which not only encompasses the physical but also the spiritual. All people possess both aspects, even if one of them is the preponderant.

The teachings of Hermes Trismegistus are still in force through various divinatory practices.

Among the best examples of how up is down is astrology, especially when it comes to the elaboration of natal charts that is very fashionable.

Likewise, the reading of the Tarot, which is based on the fact that the cards chosen at random mark the future, which according to the law of cause and effect is not the product of luck.

Both modalities are in line with the famous Hermetic phrases: as above, so below,  and as within, so without.
